For all you plant and tree people. Entomologists are welcome to guess also.
This will not be as easy as you might think since you can’t see a full leaf and the veins. In fact, this may be a dwarf variety which is not native to Texas. It is growing in the Ft. Worth Botanic Garden.
I will show an expanded view in a couple of days showing the full leaf. In the meantime, I am going back and take a closer look at this tree (and take more photographs). When I originally made the photograph, I was just interested in the cool acorn growing upside down (at least to me). Alas, I should have taken a closer look at the entire tree (bark, twigs, average leaf size, average number of leaf tooths, length of petiole, the average amount that the cup covers the acorn, etc., etc.) I thought that I knew its exact species. Let that be a lesson. Pay attention. It really is a mystery.
